Electric MG Midget
Welcome to this site.
Here I have included information about my conversion of a Midget to full electric. I have now driven it over 8,500 in the last 2 years. I use it almost daily and only charge it about every 3 days. I have measured the range at 112 miles, so for me I never have to worry about range. I have posted information on this site that can be used by anybody interested in converting any car to electric. There is a section on measuring you car’s drag coefficient, lightening you flywheel to improve acceleration, LiFePo4 batteries and more. If you found this site through an interest in MGs there is information specific to them as well. Please feel free to check out the many articles that are shown in the menu at the top of each page.
I started driving an MG Midget in 1975, it was my first car that I bought for $225 and had to be towed home. Ever since then I’ve been driving a Midget and my ’74 Midget is about to hit 200,000 miles. I’ve been blessed with short commutes all of my working life which makes the Midget an ideal commuting vehicle. Being inherently cheap, I’ve learned to work on my own cars, and have repaired most everything on the Midget at least once. About ten years ago I started looking into converting a Midget to electric operation, but the expense and the lack of good battery technology kept me from trying. Five years ago the Lithium batteries where showing up, but the cells I kept finding on the Internet (Thundersky) didn't have a good reputation. Now you can find li-on cells offered by many reputable distributors with a few brands to choose from. Since I've bought my batteries the capacities have increased another 10%, so range will get even better in the future.
The car has been running since September 2011. As of December 2012, I now have 4500 miles on the car and I've sold my gas midget after owning it for 35 years. The electric one is running great and I don't have room for two Midgets. I'll be discussing various aspects of how I finished the car, along with new information about my attempts to improve it. This site will be changing, so please check back to see what's new.
I've added advertising to help pay for the site. The adds are safe, so if something catches your eye please feel free to investigate it. I have left the ability to close the advertising column if you want to do so.
